After dating for almost 4 years, Jon surprised me with an exquisite engagement. He planned secretly for a long time without my knowing...ok, I sorta knew. How can you be so ga-ga over someone and NOT know they want to marry you? But I didn't want to take his thunder on this one ;-)
This is the email that I sent out to friends and family after returning from my engagement in Canada:
Hello loved ones far and near!
I wanted to send a note to all of you officially announcing that Jonathan and I are ENGAGED!!!
Go ahead, take a moment to reread that awesome sentence.
He proposed this past weekend during a surprise trip to Vancouver, BC. It is nearly impossible to sum up all the lovely yumminess of the whole experience but here is an overview:
On Friday morning, when his alarm-clock was going off for work and he just turned it off and rolled over, he surprised me and let me know we were going on a trip that day! We packed quickly and excitedly (miraculously remembering to bring the Q-tips this time) and head off on I-5 north driving into Canada. We were so bloody excited. We have never been outside the country and I felt the need, in my excitement, to tell the mounty all this at the border... as well as the fact I am a student studying web design and offering to make him a web page.
Yeah, I get dorky when I'm excited.
So moving along, we ended up at Stanley Park in Vancouver which seems just about as big as the city. The park is HUGE! We drive around to take it all in. We end up at Prospect Point which is a look out point marking the first ship that landed on Canadian soil that departed from England. We hiked down to the sea wall and ended up going for a 4 hour hike along the coastline just taking pictures, looking at all the nature, breathing in the sea air and talking to anyone who looked friendly (which is just about everyone). We ended up at another look out area that had a beach about 4 kilometers from where we started (yeah, kilometers, he he he). We stood by the waters edge in silence and just enjoyed that very moment. Everything about that moment.
We moved to a bench to sit and take it all in. That is when Jonathan reached around holding the open box with the most beautiful ring inside and said "Katie..."
Needless to say, at this point, I'm sobbing and giggling in a wet, bubbly, awkward display of elation.
He continues. "Will you marry me?"
Now we are both sobbing and giggling.
Judging by all the tears and giggles, you can bank on what my answer was.
We celebrated with a dinner that had so many courses, I lost count. Followed by a relaxing evening by the fire at the luxury hotel with complimentary champagne and strawberries.
I feel so loved and appreciated by this man everyday of my life that to have a culmination of events and a proposal where I feel so honored and adored just makes me want to shout it all from the roof tops!! So, thank goodness for technology; writing an email is a little safer than walking on roof shingles ;)
I am so thankful to have all of you to share this good news with. Some of you are near and I see you frequently. Some of you are far but are never forgotten and always loved. Nonetheless, you are all special to me and I'm thrilled to have all of you to share in this excitement.
We don't have a date set yet but are thinking of next August since we would like to save up for a European honeymoon. Now that we have passports, we are stamp-happy! We do know that we are going to keep the wedding intimately small and understated. We are not the type of couple who dreams of an over done fairytale wedding just for the sake of glitz. We want to use our wedding day as a day to celebrate life, love, family and friends. But for now, I am basking in moment and the love of being betrothed.
The future Kate Negley
And now, here I am as Kate Negley, passing on my money saving, thrifty wedding planning wisdom to all those brides, grooms, friends and family that are looking to have beautiful, custom, alternative weddings within their budget.
I love love, as you can tell. I would LOVE to hear stories of how you and your honey met, got engaged or got married. Share your story with me here.
