Wedding Menu Ideas

Wedding menu ideas vary just as much as wedding theme ideas. Your menu choices will reflect you as a couple, just as the whole wedding theme will. Believe it or not, wedding food has themes too!

Check out these different ideas on how to present your food at your wedding:

Fine Dining

For a wedding that is grand and classy, you might opt for the fine dining experience. This style typically includes catering and a full 3 course meal: Appetizers, Main Course and Dessert.

Dessert does not include the cake but is served in tandem with the cake cutting and is most often smaller desserts. An example of this wedding menu idea would be as follows:

  • Spinach and Feta Puffs
  • Bacon Wrapped Scallops
  • Fresh Shrimp served on Ice with Cocktail Sauce
Entree - Main Course
  • Baked Salmon Fillet
  • Beef Tenderloin stuffed with Mushrooms
  • Eggplant Parmesan
Desserts - not including Wedding Cake
  • Cream Puffs
  • Chocolate Mousse
  • Mini Strawberry Cheesecake

Choosing to offer a buffet is a fun and easy way to present the meal at your wedding. It is a good way to get guests out of their seats and mingling. Plus it offers an easy way to get a lot of food out fast. This is a great option when you want to save money with larger weddings.

Some wedding menu ideas would be:
  • Baked Ziti
  • Sandwiches and Fixings
  • Macaroni and Cheese
  • Pulled Pork
  • Ceaser Salad

A fun spin would be to offer a dessert bar or a candy buffet, too!

Having a barbecue at your wedding can tie in with so many wedding ideas. It can be a fun addition if you are looking for backyard wedding ideas or hosting an outdoor wedding at a park. Or maybe the bride wants to celebrate being a Southern belle or the groom being a Southern gentleman.

Some wedding menu ideas would be:
  • Burgers and Hot Dogs
  • Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, Relish and Fixings
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Veggie Kabobs
  • Summer Salad
  • Corn on the Cob
  • Watermelon

Cocktail Party

Having a cocktail party is an elegant favorite of mine for small wedding ideas. This is what we did for our wedding and it was fantastic. It felt like there was a lot of food since the wedding was only a few hours. There was a different thing to eat or drink all through out the evening. Also, this is another great way to get your guests to mingle comfortably. And we saved a TON of money on the food costs!

As an example, this is what we chose for our wedding:
  • First, beer and wine hour - included soda
  • Then came the cheese and cracker trays
  • Then it was time for the seasonal fruit and yogurt dip trays
  • Finally, the cake was dessert!

Everyone was satisfied and pleased with the quality of the cheese and fruits. And no one left hungry! Now that I think of it, we should have taken home the leftovers! Yum!

Finally, as a real money saver, opt for a potluck style meal for your wedding. There is no shame in asking for or accepting help when it comes to having a wedding nowadays - and that includes help for the meal, too. Brides and their families are even making their own wedding cakes these days.

Ask your guests to bring a plate of their favorite dish. If your wedding is an all day festivity, people will be eating through out the day. With a potluck, there will be no shortage of food. And you will get to sample new recipes. As if eating could be any more fun!
